On Thursday, a Des Moines high school student displayed a Confederate flag from his vehicle. School officials requested that he remove it. The student, Jake Malloy, claimed his flying of the flag was not based in racism. He said the flag was flown for fallen soldiers of the Civil War and that it’s a sign of “progression”. Others see the Confederate Flag as representative of the South Union’s fight to preserve slavery. Malloy wouldn’t take the flag down but he complied with removing his car from campus. The district said they support free expression but that student safety comes first.
