Opinion/Letter: Statues facilitate necessary debate

In Virginia a new battle is being fought , a battle to erase the racism of past history. The removal of historic statues is a possibility after a new movement to remove symbols of racism. It would be unfair for the statues of Lee and Jackson to be removed, and the statues of Lewis And Clark to remain. This will in turn create a skewed history.

Key Takeaways:

  • Wars are generally fought to enable exploitation by the elite of forces driving economic growth (slavery in 1860, oil today).
  • The Lee and Jackson statues are monuments to those who sacrificed in our nation’s most gruesome conflict and to the leaders they looked up to as beacons of valor, chivalry, and hope.
  • a monument to our rejection of an evil as great as slavery that was once so profitably pursued right here in Court Square.

“Clearly, though, by themselves they present a skewed history. It therefore seems entirely appropriate to place, in a position of equal prominence, a monument to our rejection of an evil as great as slavery that was once so profitably pursued right here in Court Square.”
