Savannah-Chatham police, Army EOD dispose of Civil War era cannonball unearthed downtown

Tourists staying at downtown Savannah hotels near the east end of Bay Street had an interesting wake-up call Wednesday morning. It came in the form of a boom, about 9 a.m., as the U.S. Army blew up a Civil War-era explosive at Trustees Garden, just east of East Broad Street. Then came car alarms and a plume of black smoke. The controlled explosion was the second in three days at the site, both times prompted by century-old black-powder explosives unearthed by construction crews.
