The daughter of Confederate Civil War veteran, Iva Lee Benson Gainey of Benson, will be honored as a Real Daughter of Confederacy. She is one of a select few that are still surviving. Gainey’s father, Charles H. Benson, enlisted at age 20 and served as a private in the 24th North Carolina Regiment, Company I. His daughter is being honored at a reception at the Heritage Center’s Holding-Richardson Exhibit Hall, and the event is open to the public.
