There are many misconceptions when it comes to the history of flags, and Gene Oakley is working to fix these. He went over some of these at a historical presentation recently and brought to light many interesting things. For example, the flag we associate with the Confederacy was actually simply a battle flag, the official flag looks very similar to the original Stars and Stripes. Another point he spoke on was the original flag of the United States. Until 1777, the stars in the upper left were actually the British Union Jack, not the design we think of today.
