A Texas historian named Michael Phillips is calling for the state to “exorcise the ghosts of the confederacy, which still haunt the Dallas landscape” by removing the Confederate War Memorial that stands in downtown Dallas. He is not advocating for the destruction of the statue, which has stood sine 1896, but instead removed from public viewing and preserved in a museum. The hope is that a petition he has been circulating will ultimately attract the attention of the mayor.
