The University of Texas at Austin plans to remove four statues of people connected to the Confederacy. University leaders have determined that the statues are symbolic of white supremacy. At least one statue, of Robert E Lee, will be moved to the school’s Briscoe Center for American History so that it will available for those who wish to study it.
The decision was made after similar statues led to violence, and even one death, in Charlottesville, Virginia the week before. The incident became Donald Trump’s biggest domestic crisis so far in his presidency.
