A white Georgia Republican state representative, Spencer, warned that advocates for removing the Confederate statues may “go missing in the Okefenokee.” This led to Spencer and Jones, a black former colleague of his, working together on legislation that would convert the largest Confederate memorial in the country, Georgia’s Stone Mountain, into a Civil War memorial. Municipalities may not be able to remove their own Confederate monuments unless they sell the monuments to individuals who will preserve them for historical value.
