St. Clair: Lee deserves a monument

Gene St. Clair, a computer technician, and New Castle resident wants to see a monument dedicated to Robert E. Lee erected in Richmond. Like most southerners, Lee was against secession and slavery. Abraham Lincoln wanted Lee to command the Union Army, however, Lee declined citing his loyalty to his “country”. At the end of the war, Lee lost his Arlington home and of course his citizenship. President Lincoln planned to reinstate Lee’s citizenship but was assassinated before that could occur. As a proud southerner that detests racism, St. Clair feels a kinship with Robert E. Lee.

Key Takeaways:

  • All decent Southerners are against racism and hate. And all Americans should know Robert E. Lee deserves a monument in his honor.
  • In 1970 a law clerk discovered the paperwork and President Gerald Ford signed the papers in 1975 reinstating Lee as an American citizen.
  • The rebel flag is not about hate or neo-Nazis, but represents the heritage of the South which lost 300,000 lives including some 50,000 civilians in the Civil War.
