Candidate for US Senate, Chris McDaniel, vows to defend the current Mississippi flag from a rising campaign to redesign it to not include the Confederate Battle Emblem. In 2001 referendum 64% supported the present flag but the tide changed after the Dylan Roof shooting in Charleston, SC. The confederate emblem is a source of pride for some but a symbol of hatred and oppression to many. Incumbent Republican Senator Roger Wicker supports discussing a change.
