Being a Color Guard during the Civil War was one of the most unacknowledged tasks during the war. Color Guards risked their lives while protecting this valuable piece of history. Many stories of Color Guards are told entailing their heroic adventures and methods for which these flags were carried and kept safe. No matter which side of the war you are on, we can all agree these men had very important jobs.

Key Takeaways:

  • The most precarious role on the battlefield is serving as a member of the color guard.
  • During the Civil War, it was not uncommon for a half-dozen men carrying the flag to become casualties in a single battle.
  • Members of the color guard are the unsung heroes in warfare, including the conflict between the states more than 150 years ago.
