Could the Governor’s Race in Virginia Turn on the Question of Confederate Monuments?

Democratic Governor Henry Carter Stuart dedicated the The Virginia monument at the Gettysburg Battlefield a century ago in July of 1917. Since the incidents in Charlottesville in August, there has been a surge in debates over confederate monuments. The next Governor will be left with the difficult task of deciding how to handle the issue. Republican candidate Ed Gillespie opposes the removal of confederate statues, while Democratic candidate Ralph Northam believes they should be removed. In an already tight race, their interpretations of the history and beliefs may heavily determine the outcome.
