
On January 23, 1866, North Carolina became the first among the former Confederate states in the United States to buy artificial limbs for amputees, due to the state’s citizens who participated in the Civil War and needed help to acquire artificial limbs. The General Assembly of North Carolina passed a resolution to have the state operate the artificial limbs program for five years.
