Lee Escapes from Gettysburg

After the bloody battle of Gettysburg General Lee smartly retreated and moved his troops out of the area. If the North had the capacity or the will to keep up the barrage they may have completely won the war at that point. The retreat gave the South the time to heal and regather themselves. I am a big football fan it reminds me a bit of a battered team going in at halftime and coming out with a new energy and focus for the second half.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Gettysburg Campaign didn’t end with the Battle of Gettysburg.
  • Union Brig. Gen. Judson Kilpatrick was a hellbent-for-leather commander.
  • Historians today believe Meade did the best he could given his limitations.

“Lee’s reeling army braced for a counterattack that never came, much to the relief and bewilderment of the Confederates.”
