Letter to the editor: Seek compromise on monuments

A letter has been written to the editor that seeks to compromise on the Confederate monuments. Racial tensions have resurfaced because of the Confederate monuments. There is an agreeable compromise that is in order. A plaque, or historical monument should be under supervision by historians. The historians need to be authentic as well.

Key Takeaways:

  • Southern leaders implemented a period of repressive segregation which kept black people under political and social submission for a century
  • The Southern economy was based largely upon human slavery while the Northern businesses were not.
  • In the 21st century many members of both races have accepted the premise that racial harmony is the desired way forward for our nation.

“Any plaque or historical statement should be under the supervision of authentic historians, not politicians wishing to make a political point.”
