OPINION: Punishment won’t stop offensive costumes, but education might

Colleges are drawing the line on Halloween costumes. Nobody can make fun of serious and sensitive issues like rape and suicide. Kids, lose that Robin Williams mask or the ghoulish Bill Cosby outfit. Though well intended, bans are like a band aid. To address the bad judgement that concludes rape or suicide is something to make fun of, education may be the better way to go.

Key Takeaways:

  • Several colleges have prohibited offensive Halloween costumes.
  • People can use the refusal to be politically correct to justify saying or doing whatever they would like without considering the full ramifications of their actions.
  • If colleges explain the dangers, perhaps students will make an effort to be more considerate on Halloween.

“Brock University of Ontario, for example, has banned any costume that “makes fun of suicide or rape (for example Bill Cosby, Robin Williams), anything containing the Confederate flag in any form, Costumes that represent a culture’s’ traditional dress.””
