Soldiers are trained with strict discipline and honor. They must follow orders whenever given. They must put down their lives for the innocent and just. However, 3 year-old Cooper didn’t know this. All he understood was that his mother, who was gone for 9 months to Afghanistan, was finally standing in front of him, awaiting a hug. It was a no-brainer that he’d run up to her; what was also a no-brainer was her reaction, a swift loving return of the hug. It may have been against what she was instructed to do, but can one really blame the mother, Kathryn Waldvogel? She missed her child after almost a year without seeing him; I think that warrants a slight breach in etiquette.
Salute both Kathryn and Cooper below and tell them how you feel.
