Rebel doctor years later repaid York farmer for horse taken in Gettysburg Campaign

Confederate soldiers took horses from families in York County during a March across the country. One man, Jacob Rudy, filed a lawsuit for damages incurred when his horse was stolen by one of these soldiers. Years after his death, it turns out that his family did finally receive payment for what was taken from them at war time.

Key Takeaways:

  • Rebels in civil war took horses from farmers
  • Some rebels felt guilty
  • Rebels repaid family whose horses were taken many years ago

“One of General Gordon’s former soldiers, perhaps feeling guilty about taking the horse, wanted to make it right.”
