Zachary Hubbard | We must learn from history, not destroy it

Our Nation’s history may have some good moments and bad moments, but overall it’s our history. Just like the rest the world, we have a past, and our past is what makes us who we are today. Even as humans, all have some type of event we wish didn’t happen, but we can’t just act like it never did happen. When they took down a monument in New Orleans, there were people who died for that, and we can’t take that away. It’s apart of our nations history. We can’t change the past, we must learn from it.

Key Takeaways:

  • Americans should take the time to learn history to avoid repeating it.
  • Human ignorance of history results in the destruction of cultural artifacts, such as the Buddhas of Baimya in 2001.
  • A recent controversy is the removal of statues of Confederate generals from the South, and whether it is erasing history or removing a hateful legacy.

“Political correctness is threatening to destroy an important part of American history and culture related to the Civil War.”
