Tupelo mayor removes Confederate-themed flag

Until now, a Confederate Mississippi flag was on show outside Tupelo’s police building. By an executive order from the mayon, Jason Shelton, the flag will be removed after only a week of its tenure. Interestingly, these flags by the police building are located in a neighborhood known for its sizable black population, and was seen as racist by many. In fact, a couple of African-Americans who hold positions in local government opposed the flag, which was said by others to be a misrepresentation of a state with almost half its population as African-American. Though voters have chosen to retain the symbol on the flag for many years now, many cities, counties, and the state’s universities have stopped displaying the flag. Now, Tupelo’s own flag will replace the old flag at the police building.
